Choosing New Books

I'm having trouble figuring out when to have the students choose books.  More books are needed by the reader the lower the reading level.  It is suggested by CAFE that choosing books should be at a time other than reading time.  Do you have any ideas?  What does book choice look like in your room?

Thanks in advance,
Angela

  1. I'm trying this suggestion this week.

"The First 5-10 Minutes each day all students have the opportunity to brows for books and greet their classmates." Teacher suggestion from the CAFE site

I think students will still need support with selecting a "Just Right" book.

  2. I am allowing the children to choose books at reading time as I feel that right now this is good practice for them to choose the "just right books" I want them to have at their fingertips. This may be altered as the year continues.

  3. I am currently letting children choose books as they are into their Daily 5 activities. I want them to have time practicing picking those "just right books". I am not certain that I will continue the same way, but it seems to be working okay right now.
